The top panel is partially tarnished (in process). If left unsealed, the silver surface that extends from the surface furthest will tarnish first. It is the movement of air carrying impurities to the surface (hastened by moisture) that creates tarnish - which is actually a third metal, neither silver nor impurity, but a chemical fusion of the two.
